Montreal

Montreal is the second largest city in Canada, and the largest in Quebec. It is a wonderful city with lots of attractions and friendly people (very different from Paris).

McGill University was founded in 1821, during the British colonial era.

The Stade Olympique (Olympic Stadium) was built for the 1976 Summer Olympics. It seats 56,000 people, and has the world's tallest inclined structure at 175 meters.

The Biosphere was built for the 1967 World's Fair. It houses exhibits that all involve water.

The Jacques Cartier Bridge crosses the Saint Lawrence River. The bridge opened for traffic in 1930.

Downtown Montreal seen from the airplane. The 233 meter hill to the right is Mont Royal, which gave the city its name. The locals like to call it a mountain.

Across the square from Bank of Montreal is the most famous church of the city, Basilique Notre-Dame, which opened in 1829.

No nails were used for the construction of the spectacular hand made wood carvings.

The organ in Basilique Notre-Dame has 5772 pipes.

Place Jacques-Cartier is one of the liveliest places in the old town. The building at the top end of the square is the city hall, Hotel de Ville.

Croix du Mont Royal is one of the city's landmarks. It was erected in 1924 on the spot of an earlier cross planted by the city's founder.
