I visited Baku in June, 2006, and then took the night train onwards to Tbilisi in Georgia.

The Absheron peninsula, where Baku sits on the tip, has been the site of oil production since the 1870s, and it is today one of the most polluted places on Earth.

2001 – Tokyo, Japan

I was one week in Tokyo in early May 2001.
New Tokyo

Tokyo is a modern city with 12 million inhabitants. It is cleaner than most cities of its size, and crime barely exists. The population is more homogenous than most big cities.

Tsukiji Market

Every day, more than 2 million kilo fish are sold at the Tokyo Central Wholesale Market in Tsukiji. At the market, one can also find fruit, vegetables and meat.

Dead Sea

2000 – The Levant

While on vacation in Egypt in December 2000, André and I made a trip to Israel and Jordan. We visited the ancient city of Petra, the Dead Sea and Jerusalem.

Our first stop was the ancient city of Petra. The city was carved out in the mountains about 2000 years ago.

The next stop was the Dead Sea. We stayed at the Mövenpick Hotel at the northernmost part of the Dead Sea.

2000 – Aegean Sea

1993 – Hong Kong, Macao and China

In September 1993, while I was working as a UN soldier in Somalia, I travelled to Hong Kong, Macao and China.

Mumbai

1993 – India

In 1993 I travelled to India with a fellow soldier who also wanted to get away from Somalia for a while. We stayed in Bombay (later renamed Mumbai) and then went on to the former hippie paradise of Goa, now a more family friendly holiday destination.
Bombay

Bombay is the capital of the state of Maharashtra, and one of the most populous cities in the world. It is the commercial and entertainment center of India.

Goa is the smallest (in terms of area) state in India, located just south of Maharashtra. The state is renowned for its beaches, and was earlier a popular destination for hippies.
