Oslo is the capital and largest city in Norway. I was there for Constitution Day, May 17. The Norwegian constitution dates from 1814, and it is celebrated with children's parades all over the country.

The World's largest cruise ship, Freedom of the Seas, stopped in Oslo from the 26th to the 27th of April, on her maiden voyage.

On our way to and from Copenhagen, we drove through Sweden. We stopped in Gothenburg and at the Uddevalla bridge.

On the 27th of January, 2005, the wife of my brother gave birth to a baby girl, and Anton and I went to Sotra to see the baby. We also visited Bergen.

2004 – Svalbard, Norway

I visited the island group Svalbard on the last few days of May, 2004. Svalbard is only about 1300 km from the North Pole Point, and enjoys midnight sun for four months during summer. In addition to Norwegian settlements, there are also a large Russian settlement, and a smaller Polish one.

Pictures from Longyearbyen and surrounding area. Longyearbyen is the largest settlement and the administrative center of Svalbard.

Tallinn

2003 – Estonia

I visited Estonia again in October and December after my tour of the Baltics in August 2003.

The week before Christmas I travelled to Tallinn for Christmas shopping, and to see Anton, who I met last time I was in Tallinn. Together we visited the Kadriorg Palace a few kilometers outside the city.

Two months after I was there on my summer holiday, I returned to Tallinn for a weekend in October. The city is even more beautiful in the fall, when the trees are bursting with colors.

2003 – Nordic and Baltic tour

From July 31 to August 24, I drove around the Baltic sea, through 10 different countries, and staying in 8 different cities; Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Minsk, Kaliningrad and Copenhagen.
Stockholm, Sweden

The first stop on my trip was in Stockholm, where I stayed for 3 days. I was there at the end of Stockholm Pride week, and got to see the parade that Saturday.

From Stockholm, I took the over-night ferry to Helsinki in Finland.

Tallinn, Estonia

From Helsinki, a short ferry trip took me to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Tallinn is a charming city, with a well preserved old town.

Riga, Latvia

Riga is about 4 hours drive from Tallinn. Riga is a relatively large city, with almost a million inhabitants, and there is a charming old town here as well.

Vilnius, Lithuania

Lithuania is the most populous of the three Baltic countries, but there are still less than 4 million people in this country.

Minsk, Belarus

Vilnius is only a 30 minutes drive from the border of Belarus, so I had to make a visit there too. Belarus is one of the few communist countries still around, and the bureaucracy was evidend from the first contact. The border crossing formalities took 90 minutes.

Kaliningrad, Russia

Kaliningrad is a Russian city of almost half a million people, in a small piece of land between Lithuania and Poland, separate from the rest of Russia. This is one of the ugliest cities I have ever seen.

Copenhagen, Denmark

From Kaliningrad I drove to Gdansk in Poland and took a ferry from there to Copenhagen, where I spent the last few days of my holiday, before driving back to Oslo over the Øresund bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden.
